My Journey: Grade School

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted a career that was in the S.T.E.M. field. Whenever I was asked in school what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was always a baby doctor (OB/GYN). There is still even proof of those wants from several school papers that were kept from when I was a grade school student. I specifically remember a project that I did in kindergarten, which I still have. The project was a good to know me type of project, this one sticks out to me because the worksheet was glued to a yellow piece of construction paper that was in the shape of a star. There were the typical questions, such as what is your favorite color, food, and all the other favorite random things. It also asked what you wanted to be, the answer was an OB/GYN. I feel that I probably wanted to be an OB/GYN because when I was in kindergarten, I had just gotten a little sister the year prior, and my mom was pregnant with my little brother. I thought going to her appointments were super cool and interesting. As I grew older, I still wanted to continue to be an OB/GYN so I would read all sorts of books about the body and learn as much as I could about how to be a doctor. I think the shows ER and Grey’s Anatomy might have played into the want, as well since it was something that I recall to this day watching with my mom. I eventually did transition to being a neurosurgeon in 8th grade for awhile, but that is for another time.
